Canada Offers Pathway to H-1B Visa Holders in Tech Talent Bid
Canada hopes the tech talent acquisition program will give it an edge.

Canada has launched a bid to attract techies working in the U.S. on H-1B visas, by offering them the chance to move north.
The offer, announced as part of the nation's first ever tech talent strategy, means H-1B visa holders can move to Canada without having a job waiting for them.
The H-1B visa is contentious in the U.S. Its purpose is to attract skilled people whose talents are in short supply, but the visa is believed to be abused by employers to find employees willing to work for less than their American peers.
Mass layoffs in the tech sector in 2023 have affected some H-1B visa holders, who have just 90 days to leave the U.S. if they don't have a job. Canada has spotted an opportunity to nab some of that talent.
Canada has created 10,000 places for H-1B holders, which must be filled within a year as of July 16. The work permits issued under the program last three years.
