In California, Does Data Science = Algebra II?
California is one of 17 states that now offer data science to high school students, and at least two offer it as an alternative to Algebra II.

The State of California is reviewing a 2020 decision that allowed high school applicants to public universities to take data science as a substitute for Algebra II courses. The State Board of Education has withdrawn its endorsement of this policy as part of new guidelines for K-12 schools.
The universities had originally revised their admissions criteria as an "equity issue" that could bring more students into college. However, a University of California faculty committee said it will re-examine which high school courses meet state standards for "advanced math," following claims by Black faculty members that data science courses hurt Black and Latino students "by steering them away from being prepared for STEM [science, technology, engineering, and math] majors."
