Security researchers at IOActive accessed an internal camera inside the Deckmate 2 card shuffler used in casinos to learn the exact deck order and the hand of every player at a poker table. They presented their results at the Black Hat USA 2023 security conference.
If someone can plug a small device into a USB port of the Deckmate 2 — which often sits under a table next to players' knees, with its USB port exposed — that hacking device could hijack the machine and invisibly tamper with its shuffling, the researchers say.
They also found that the Deckmate 2 has an internal camera that they could access to learn the entire order of the deck in real time, sending the results from their small hacking device via Bluetooth to a nearby phone.
Joseph Tartaro of IOActive says the technique could be used to cheat in any number of card games, but that it would be particularly powerful in Texas Hold'em.
