While some see artificial intelligence as the ultimate productivity tool for software development, there's no evidence to support that notion with AI development tools still in their infancy, according to Google's 2023 State of DevOps Report, based on data from 36,000 technology professionals worldwide.
It's common for experts to suggest that AI will deliver significant boosts to software development and deployment productivity, along with developer job satisfaction, but "our survey evidence doesn't support this," the report says.
"Our evidence suggests that AI slightly improves individual well-being measures — such as burnout and job satisfaction — but has a neutral or perhaps negative effect on group-level outcomes such as team performance and software delivery performance."
The findings may be related to the early stages of AI-tool adoption, the report says.
