At least 79% of developers are now looking for or are open to a new job compared to the last two years, according to a survey on the state of developer employment.

Both new tech talent and late-career developers are more likely to be looking, the survey says. The decreasing amount of entry-level openings and lack of perceived stability within the tech industry help explain the migration of new developers out of tech and the exploration of career changes by skilled developers.

"Better salary" is the top reason to look for a new job for all age groups, followed by curiosity about other companies for late career developers (aged 55 to 64). Working with new technology and growth opportunities were also cited.

The top two ways developers find out about openings at other companies are job boards (53%) and personal networks (39%). Developers are not using company-owned media until their search has started, and are most interested in educating themselves through company jobs pages (61%) followed by third-party review sites (52%).
