Thousands of faculty members who were teaching mechanical, civil, electrical, and electronics engineering are said to have lost jobs in the last year as colleges are not inclined to hire them to teach emerging tech courses.

Faculty who have been teaching core engineering courses at many colleges that offer only computer science and related courses say they are left with limited opportunities.

"I lost my job in June and ever since I have been trying to find a job, but no luck," says Dev Singh, who worked as a faculty member at a college mechanical engineering department for 12 years. Despite completing a course in Python, he was not hired back in the computer science department, he says.

Manzoor Hussain, senior professor and registrar at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad, says many faculty from core branches are moving to IT industry.
