Some parts of the U.S. government appear to be making it harder for some Indian science and tech guys to work in America. Meanwhile, other parts appear to be trying to encourage more Indians to enter the fields of science and technology, a choice that could one day see some of these young students join U.S. firms.
On Thursday (August 26), the U.S. embassy in New Delhi organized a one-day workshop on women in science with the support of the Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum, which aims to foster cooperation between the two countries and helps send Indian students to the U.S. for research fellowships and internships.
Many young women who looked to be in high school were in the audience, listening attentively as female business leaders and U.S. officials exhorted them to stick with science.
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, chairwoman of the Indian biotechnology healthcare enterprise Biocon, said that India needed the active participation of women in institutes of scientific learning in order to grow.
