Ray Ozzie, the executive who became Microsoft Corp.'s top technical visionary after the retirement of cofounder Bill Gates, plans to leave the software company.
In an email sent to Microsoft employees, Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said Mr. Ozzie plans to step down from his position as chief software architect of the Redmond, WA, company. He will focus on Microsoft's investments in the field of entertainment during a transition period, the email said, and leave the company in the coming months.
Mr. Ozzie, who is 54 years old, "has no plans at this time" for another job, Mr. Ballmer wrote. The email provided no explanation for Mr. Ozzie's departure. Mr. Ballmer wrote that Microsoft has made big strides in the area of cloud computing, an initiative that Mr. Ozzie led for most of his tenure at Microsoft.
