University of Minnesota researchers are using the GroupLens artificial intelligence media recommendation system to develop BookLens, an Internet-based book recommendation system for libraries.

GroupLens was developed by Minnesota professor John Riedl in 1997. The system analyzed data from thousands of people worldwide to determine their interests based on the interests of people they agreed with most often. The university created a lab based on the GroupLens system, where students have built upon the original algorithm.

The integration of BookLens into libraries would enable the sharing of information with other libraries across a network, says Minnesota research assistant Michael Ludwig. BookLens is free and "will bring a lot of users together to share and talk about books," Ludwig says.
