Argonne Launches Tool to Help Auto Industry Reduce Costs

Autonomie, a new tool developed by Argonne National Laboratory researchers, is expected to reduce the time and money needed for the auto industry to design and test alternative vehicle technologies.

Researchers at the Argonne National Laboratory's Center for Transportation (CTR) recently unveiled Autonomie, a plug-and-play modeling tool designed to address the automotive industry's interest in reducing costs by accelerating the development and introduction of new automotive technologies. Autonomie enables users to integrate legacy models, controls, data, and processes into a single environment that can be used during the various steps of the vehicle development process.

"To reduce cost and time to production while properly evaluating and developing advanced technologies, original equipment manufacturers are turning to model-based design," says CTR manager Aymeric Rousseau. "To facilitate this goal, a standard plug-and-play model architecture and framework for interfaces of hardware and controls models is required to integrate and manage models of varying degrees of fidelity and complexity."

Autonomie enables engineers to quickly evaluate new technologies by re-using models, and makes it more economical for automakers and suppliers to work together.
