Microsoft has released the code of its F# functional programming language under an open source license. Version 2.0 of the F# compiler and core library is now available under an Apache 2.0 open source license. "This release reinforces the commitment Microsoft [is] making to F#," says Microsoft's Don Syme.
The development team plans to release new versions of compiler library code along with new releases of the language itself. The code is made available as part of the F# PowerPack.
Programs written in functional languages are written as a series of mathematical functions. They are considered to be more efficient than standard procedural languages, but difficult to use. F# offers modern programming concepts such as object-oriented programming.
