.s. Accuses China Telecom of Internet Hijack

China Telecom diverted Internet traffic from the United States and other nations for about 18 minutes on April 8 by publishing incorrect routing information that diverted data through Chinese servers, a U.S. congressional report said on Wednesday (Nov. 17). China Telecom has denied the claim.
The incident affected traffic to and from U.S. government and military sites, including those for the Senate, the Army, the Navy, the Marine corps, the Air Force, the office of Secretary of Defense, NASA, and many others, the report said.
The commission said such incidents had serious implications. "This level of access could enable surveillance of specific users or sites. It could disrupt a data transaction and prevent a user from establishing a connection with a site. It could even allow a diversion of data to somewhere that the user did not intend," it said.
