Google Wave May Become an Apache Project
Google Wave's developers have submitted the software to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), making it a candidate to become a Podling included in the Apache Incubator, ASF's preparation platform for open source projects.
The developers are currently working on a package called Wave In A Box (WAIB), which is a server that hosts and stores digital conversations that can span different electronic conversation modes. "While the initial implementation . . . did not gain sufficient traction for it to continue as a standalone Google product, there are other related projects . . . and several startups in the space that are continuing to build on the technology," according to the Incubator proposal.
Wave is one of 113 products under consideration for the Apache Incubator. Novell bundled the Wave software inside of its Vibe collaboration platform, and the U.S. Navy is investigating shipboard communications applications for the technology. The Apache vote on WAIB could happen very soon, says Wave developer Dan Peterson.
