Internet Community Incensed at 'government Only' Internet Governance Review

The United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) has announced the creation of a Working Group on Improvements to the Internet Governance Forum. However, their suggestion has been met with objections, because the group will reportedly have only government representatives.

"The decisions of the working group could frame the structure and mandate of the United Nation's Internet Governance Forum for the next five years," said ICANN in response to the announcement. "The working party [will] be made up only of 'member-states,' which means that such a body would not only exclude all non-governmental entities, such as business and technology organizations, but also limit participation of governments that are not members of the CSTD."

ICANN has entered into an alliance with several other non-government groups to ask the CSTD to retract its decision and form a group with influence from their organizations. The coalition also is urging all concerned individuals to sign a petition requesting that the CSTD guarantee that Internet governance stays open and inclusive.
