Online Game Teaches Citation Skills

View as: Print Mobile App Share:

A new online game turns collecting citations into a competitive event for students, rewarding them for their ability to locate and evaluate sources. BiblioBouts enables students to judge the relevance and credibility of sources found by their classmates, and students gain points for accurately accessing sources and for how well their peers judge their own sources.

University of Michigan researchers developed BiblioBouts as a way to help students with their research skills and make developing bibliographies more fun. BiblioBouts incorporates Zotero, a tool that enables users to pull citations from online sources, store full texts, and automatically generate exportable bibliographies. A beta form of BiblioBouts will soon be released to participating colleges, and it could be made more widely available in the future, says Michigan professor Karen Markey.

The University of Baltimore's Catherine Johnson, who helped test an earlier version of BiblioBouts, says students liked the competitive aspect of the game and found better sources.
