'Money Sucking' Phones in China Spur Government Action

The Chinese government is taking steps to stop mobile phone makers from installing malware on devices which triggers fee-based services without a user's knowledge. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said the "money-sucking software" was a problem on brand name knock-offs that use the Android operating system.

The malware leads to charges of about 2 yuan (U.S. $0.30) per month for text messages or other services, moderate enough to avoid notice.

The Ministry will address the problem by increasing inspections for handset quality, strictly regulating built-in software, and requiring telecom operators to supervise their mobile services more closely.
