Researchers at the universities of Southampton and Essex are working on the Photonics HyperHighway project, which aims to develop new technologies that can make broadband Internet 100 times faster. The six-year project, backed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, is studying fiber optics to develop new materials to increase Internet bandwidth.

"The Photonics HyperHighway project has the potential to truly revolutionize the Internet, making it much faster and more energy-efficient," says Southampton Minister for Universities and Science David Willets. He says the new system will ensure that the Web can handle the rising demand for broadband and new services such as downloadable music and TV. "What this project proposes is a radical transformation of the physical infrastructure that underpins these networks," Willetts says.
