The U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is launching a new online dashboard that will enable people to track federal spending on research and development (R&D).

The OSTP R&D Dashboard covers investments in the decade between 2000 and 2009 made by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), which are responsible for more than 80 percent of government funding for university-based research. The R&D Dashboard offers visual tools and maps for sorting and analyzing federal R&D data. Users of the R&D Dashboard can view data on awards to research institutions, and see the results of the work, such as publications, patent applications, and patents produced by researchers.

Users also can sort investments by state, congressional district, level of research institution, and research topic. The R&D Dashboard aggregates publicly available data from several agencies, including the NSF, the NIH, and the Department of Commerce's Patent and Trademark Office.
