Rochester Institute of Technology, Syracuse University, and Virginia Tech researchers have collaborated to create wireless grid technologies as part of the Wireless Grid Innovation Testbed. The researchers are developing ways to wirelessly connect electronic devices such as PCs, cameras, phones, and printers to help low-income users communicate within the neighborhood in case of an emergency.
"This system doesn't depend on infrastructure," says Rochester professor Sumita Mishra. "It doesn't require cables to be laid down or towers to be built."
Mishra's focus will be to ensure that the information that passes through the system nodes is authenticated and originates from a legitimate source. The researchers also want to develop a prototype with a health care component, academic curriculum support for teachers, and networking resources for entrepreneurs.
