Georgia Institute of Technology researchers have developed Kermit, an application that enables home users to monitor and manage their Internet connection speed, including limiting or prioritizing the traffic of a specific machine.

Developed by a team led by Georgia Tech professor Beki Grinter, Kermit enables people to measure the actual network speed made available by their Internet service providers (ISPs) and track bandwidth usage over time. Kermit will show all home devices connected to the Internet, show who is using the Internet, whether through a desktop or mobile device, and allow users to limit the speed of the device and even limit or prioritize the traffic of a specific machine. Kermit provides real-time information, and users also can view historical data to see how much bandwidth different machines use over time, which should make it easier to spot patterns. The researchers note that such features will become more important as ISPs implement usage-based pricing plans.
