Css 2.1 Emerges as Official Web Standard
The CSS 2.1 standard for Web page formatting has been completed. Although much of the Web world has moved on to CSS 3, the CSS 2.1 standard has reached a key milestone because the technology could have a shelf life that is decades long and a wider audience of organizations must deal with Web publishing.
"This publication crowns a long effort to achieve very broad interoperability," says Bert Bos, co-inventor of CSS and co-editor of CSS 2.1.
In reaching the recommendation stage, some intellectual property reassurance is offered because standard makers agree that using it will not lead to patent infringement suits. The CSS Working Group now will have more time to focus on CSS 3, which offers features such as animating the transition from one page to another, endowing boxes with rounded corners, and possibly magazine-style layouts. "Now we can turn our attention to the cool features we've been itching to bring to the Web," Bos says.
