The U.S. Department of Commerce's Internet Policy Task Force is urging collaboration between the department and private-sector businesses to establish a set of cybersecurity best practices.
A new report calls for online businesses to adhere to a code of conduct to reduce cyberattacks and online fraud. The report says the government's primary role is to aid the industry in devising voluntary codes of conduct that would unify various technical standards. The codes should reflect a broad set of responsibilities that industry members can use as a baseline when attempting to characterize their own cybersecurity needs.
The report also calls for the government to encourage industry-led initiatives and calls on organizations to deploy widely accepted standards and practices that would significantly enhance U.S. cybersecurity. One suggestion is the implementation by Web-based businesses of Domain Name System Security protocol extensions on domains hosting key Web sites to deter Web hijacking.
The report recommends federal support for research to automate cybersecurity, the creation of incentives for businesses that follow cybersecurity standards, and an expansion of cybersecurity education programs.
