Stanford University faculty are jointly developing software and testing it in the classroom to improve online education. The researchers combined ClassX, a video processing platform that facilitates lecture recording, CourseWare, an online course hosting site with social networking features, and Open Classroom, a Web platform designed to share Stanford lectures around the world.
Stanford professor Daphne Koller tested CourseWare and ClassX in a sophomore-level programming class. She posted lectures online and used class time to cover problems and review material. Koller polled the students following the course and found that about 66 percent of them said the programs were helpful.
ClassX requires the professor to upload videos to the ClassX server, which processes them for interactive streaming during playback. The viewer manipulates the video by zooming and panning while watching the video online.
CourseWare is a public Web site that enables professors to control the visibility of any material placed on their course pages. CourseWare also enables professors to upload video and interactive handouts.
