University of Utah Computer Science Camp Teaches Kids About Technology
This summer the University of Utah is hosting 350 students in elementary, middle, and high school for one- and two-week computer science camps. Utah's Graphics & Robotic Exploration with Amazing Technology (GREAT) program teaches students how to use computer programming to create animation, design video games, and power robots.
Utah professor David Johnson launched the program four years ago with 35 campers with the goal of inspiring more students to pursue science and engineering education. "We're trying to show them computer science and robotics are fun activities--engaging, exciting, creative things," Johnson says.
He also hopes to dispel the stereotype that computer science is for lone geeks in basements. The students work in pairs and teams for all of the projects, and they are taught by university students.
