Phone App Could Keep an Eye on Your Ride
Hand's on: An Intel researcher demonstrates a way to securely link a phone app to a particular vehicle.

Intel researchers are working on a project that connects the electronics inside a car to the Internet, so that mobile applications can provide a car owner with updates on the vehicle when the two are separated.
The system involves installing a custom circuitboard that interfaces with the car's electronics and connects it to a cloud server over the mobile network. "The idea of being notified when something happens to your car has a lot of appeal," says Intel researcher Victor Lorenz.
Intel also is working on how a car equipped with the system could share data with a manufacturer about the car's performance. The Intel system would be easy for software developers to write applications that could be used on many different vehicles, says ABI Research analyst Dominique Bonte.
Safety and security features are the most popular connected-car technologies among consumers, according to a recent ABI Research survey. However, as car manufacturers make it easier to build apps for vehicles the market for music and game in-car apps will follow a similar path to that of mobile phone apps, Bonte says.
