Experts Complacent About Communication Network Attacks
Industry experts could be underestimating the vulnerability of the Internet due to physical attacks to telecommunications infrastructure, according to a recent Lancaster University survey. Just 9% of respondents thought physical attacks to the infrastructure was a likely threat to the future of Internet security, the survey found.
Meanwhile, 33% of respondents listed breaches of trust in-house and misuse of personal information as the most important Internet security concerns. The threat of malicious network traffic attacks and cloud computing vulnerabilities were the other issues identified by industry leaders and researchers, at 27% and 18%, respectively.
The Lancaster researchers also found that industry experts thought social engineering attacks was an important future risk, while researchers thought malicious traffic attacks was the most important. The new research will help improve the understanding of new vulnerabilities of the infrastructure for future Internet and cloud computing environments. "Such threats will be far ranging, from social and human factors to new access devices, applications, and end-systems such as iPads, smartphones, Facebook, laptops, in-car communications, iPlayer, and online gaming," says Lancaster's Andreas Mauthe.
