Icann Chief to Leave at End of Term
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) president Rod Beckstrom is planning to leave the agency after his three-year term is up in July 2012.
Under Beckstrom, the United States loosened its control over the agency and granted it greater autonomy and opened it up to international oversight. In addition, Beckstrom supervised a plan to grow the number of generic top-level domains available and introduced internationalized domain names, which enable Internet users to access the Web using native scripts as well as Latin characters. He also has overseen the shift to Internet Protocol version 6, the next generation of Internet addresses.
"I am incredibly proud of ICANN's achievements throughout my tenure," Beckstrom says. "In two short years we have advanced this organization to a new level of professionalism and productivity, and turned it into a genuinely multinational organization that will serve the world community long after my time here."
