Google, Opendns Add Geo Speed Boost to Net

OpenDNS, Google, and Verisign have built new technology into their Internet operations that is designed to accelerate the delivery of data worldwide. The technology augments the Domain Name System (DNS), which provides the numeric Internet Protocol (IP) address needed to get data to an Internet domain.
"Anybody using OpenDNS or Google Public DNS will immediately get the benefits of this technology," says OpenDNS CEO David Ulevitch.
Google proposed the technology last year, and it has been under discussion for longer than that, according to Ulevitch. "Google is committed to making the Internet faster--not just for our users, but for everyone," says Google engineer Dave Presotto.
The technology uses the first 75 percent of an IP address to narrow down a general location, and then the DNS resolver finds the exact IP address in question, enabling data to be delivered more smoothly by solving the problem of Internet latency. Although the technology has yet to be standardized, Ulevitch thinks it will happen within a year.
