Magnifying Research: Scientists Team Together to Upgrade K-State's Supercomputer, Benefiting Other Colleges, Too
Kansas State University (K-State) researchers are using a three-year, $700,000 U.S. National Science Foundation grant to upgrade the university's Beocat supercomputer. Beocat is a cluster of servers that provides computational support for four colleges and 12 to 15 departments across the K-State campus.
The new funding will more than double its research capabilities by upgrading Beocat's individual machines to 1 TB of memory and more than 2,000 total cores. "That's like 1,500 laptops stacked up or 1,000 desktops stacked up and working together," says K-State professor Daniel Andresen.
Beocat currently supports about 400 users working on research projects in fields such as life sciences, genetics, chemistry, and agriculture. "This upgrade will help with simulation because you can model things first that might be very expensive before you actually apply them," Andresen says.
Beocat also will help researchers at other institutions in Kansas. "This will also help the Kansas work force because we are going to be graduating more people who actually know how to use these cutting-edge technologies," Andresen says.
