First-Ever Leadership in Science Policy Institute Kicks Off

The Computing Community Consortium recently held its inaugural Leadership in Science Policy Institute workshop in Washington, D.C., which gave 35 computing researchers an opportunity to participate in an event intended to educate them about U.S. science policy.
The participants attended presentations and discussions with science policy experts, current and former Congressional staff, and agency and administration officials. Speakers included Jeannette Wing of Carnegie Mellon University, who discussed opportunities to advise and engage agencies such as the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and the National Institutes of Health. The Computer Science and Telecommunications Board's Herb Lin covered the role of the board, while Kei Koizumi with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy articulated the mechanics of the budget process.
Microsoft's Elizabeth Grossman discussed typical interactions with congressional staff, and Dan Byers and Dahlia Sokolov on the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee addressed the difficulties in communicating the value of research to policymakers and in prioritizing science investments in the current political climate.
