Teachers will be able to design and develop lesson plans using digital technologies as a result of a project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

The project has developed the Learning Designer, software designed to apply computer-supported collaborative learning to the professional development of teachers.

"Teachers need support in working out how to introduce technology gradually within resource constraints, how to best use existing materials, and how to take full advantage of technology for the benefit of their learners," says Institute of Education professor Diana Laurillard. "It offers teachers an array of ideas and advice, from educational concepts relevant to their chosen activity, to alternative designs relevant to the teaching and learning of that activity."

The interactive program enables teachers to work together to plan and design their teaching resources, and export designs to share with colleagues. When teachers complete a lesson or module, the software analyzes how student time is spent on different types of learning and how much time will be required of teachers. The Learning Designer helps teachers tailor the learning experience to individual students, and saves time because teachers will be able to reuse the technology-enhanced learning resources.
