Cybersecurity Research Gets Boost in 2013 Budget Request

President Obama's fiscal 2013 budget request prioritizes basic research and development (R&D) in cybersecurity at the Department of Defense (DoD), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
The proposal also includes full funding for the Department of Justice's Comprehensive National Cyber security Initiative to safeguard U.S. networks. In addition, the proposal requests $769 million to fund the DHS National Cyber Security Division's operations tasked with the protection of civilian computer systems.
Funding for the new U.S. Cyber Command, tasked with providing offensive cybercapabilities, also is included in the request. In addition, DoD makes a $69.4 billion request for R&D funding, including $11.9 billion for early stage science and technology programs. DoD's budget request also includes support for collaborative programs with DHS in shielding civilian and private-sector infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Obama's 2013 request earmarks $110 million for a fundamental critical information infrastructure research program at NSF, and $8 million to NIST to fund the National Program Office for the president's National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace.
