Researchers at the Interuniversity Microelectronics Center (Imec) and Ghent University recently launched IPKISS, a generic and modular open source software framework for the parametric design of photonic integrated components and circuits.

The researchers say IPKISS currently is used in the design of photonic components and complex photonic integrated circuits. The platform enables users to define photonic components, directly simulate them in electromagnetic solvers, and integrate them in a circuit on a photomask fabrication.

The researchers note that IPKISS also can be customized for use in other fields related to micro- and nano-electronics.

IPKISS is based on Python, which the researchers say makes it easy to learn and flexible to use because Python allows them to specify how a component is represented in terms of parameters. IPKISS users also will have access to software that can catalyze their research.
