Universidad Politecnica de Madrid researchers say they have developed an efficient information reconciliation technique for quantum key distribution (QKD) that could further the development of quantum cryptography.

The research shows how modern encoding techniques can improve the performance of information reconciliation methods in QKD by using low-density parity check (LDPC) codes, which have good efficiency and error correction rates. However, LDPC code efficiency is only good for very long codes within a limited error range in the quantum channel.

The new research analyzes several techniques for adapting LDPC codes so that they reduce the number of codes needed to cover the target error range. The research also introduces a new protocol that gets around the initial error rate estimation required in other proposals.
