Icann to Notify Domain Applicants of Data Breaches

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that it will notify all companies who were affected by the recent data breach in the top-level domain (TLD) Applicant System that allowed other applicants to view their user and file names.
"Clearly, we're going to take every step that we can to make sure that no one takes advantage of any information they may have obtained," says ICANN CEO Rod Beckstrom.
There is some concern that if the leaked information spread, it could be used by fraudsters to raise the price of the domains, which have the potential to go to auction if ICANN receives more than one acceptable application for them.
Beckstrom says the breach was caused by a glitch in the system rather than by an attack to gain applicant information. He also says ICANN is currently investigating to determine what data became visible to which other applicants, while those applicants who may have been affected will be notified on May 8.
ICANN says it has fixed the bug and is testing the system. It plans to reopen the generic TLD application process for another five days, but it has not announced when that would begin.
