Samsung has filed a patent for a method and device that can read a user's emotions based on facial expressions.

The patent, "Method and Apparatus for Recognizing an Emotion of an Individual Based on Facial Action Units," states that Samsung has in mind "an apparatus for recognizing an emotion of an individual using action units (AUs)."

Samsung says the apparatus features a processor and a memory device coupled to the processor. The memory device includes instructions stored within it that when executed by the processor cause the processor to receive an input AU string. AUs are components of a facial-acting coding system, and several combine to form a string that is detected and matched to an emotion label that best fits the string. The device would pick up emotions by reading a person's face, and would indicate whether the user is angry, disgusted, sad, or happy.

The technology could be used in the medical field to teach people with disorders to better recognize emotions.
