Ieee Fellow: Don't Expect Nfc Payments to Have a Major Mobile Impact
Although many companies are hoping that mobile payments enabled by near-field communications (NFC) technology will catch on among consumers, the technology's impact will not be as significant as Google and other vendors believe it will be, cautions IEEE fellow Jack Winters. He says NFC-based payments will not have a major impact until the technology is widely available, and he does not anticipate NFC becoming widespread until there is more of a reason for consumers to move away from using credit cards.
"It's something that can be useful, but not until the majority of phones have it," Winters says. "I use my credit card for $2 payments sometimes and until I'm blocked from using it I don't see NFC becoming widespread."
Winters says the most important future wireless consumer technology is connected home appliances, which can both communicate with one another and be monitored remotely through wireless broadband connections. "There should be something that's monitoring everything going on in my life and warning me if anything is out of whack or requires my attention," Winters says. "The trend is between complete connectivity, and not just between users but between the wireless devices themselves."
