The TechAmerica Foundation says 22 experts and academics will collaborate to form a Big Data Commission to provide guidance to the U.S. government and businesses on using data to spur innovation and competitiveness.

The commission will be chaired by IBM's Steve Mills and SAP's Steve Lucas, while the vice chairs will be Amazon Web Services' Teresa Carlson and Bill Perlowitz of Wyle's Science, Technology & Engineering Group.

"The problem today is not gathering data but rather making intelligent, actionable decisions based on the volume, velocity, and variety of data we are receiving," says TechAmerica President Jennifer Kerber.

The commission is expected to examine such topics as how big data can be used to make intelligent decisions and improve service delivery while enabling agencies to safeguard privacy and civil liberties. Perlowitz says cultural, technical, organizational, and policy challenges must be investigated in relation to big data.

"Big data has the potential to increase efficiency, improve the speed and accuracy of decisions, forecast the future, identify savings, increase transparency, create jobs, and provide insight into our agencies and citizenry," he says.

The commission also will provide recommendations to the Obama administration and state and local governments on the deployment of cloud technologies.
