A new service from Microsoft enables developers and technology enthusiasts to remotely program their smartphones via automated messages that send text messages and alerts to jog the recipient's memory or relay a message.
The company recently announced the beta release of {X}, which is a combination site and Android application that will enable smartphones to react more dynamically to changes on a daily basis. "The code we write is an action that we hook up to a sensor-based event," Microsoft says.
Computation takes place on a smartphone, in real time, as a reaction to the real-world, sensor-based event.
Developers and others download the Android app and configure rules on the {X} site using scrips as recipes. There are ready-made templates that can be used, but users are free to create their own brand-new rules using a JavaScript application programming interface that outlines triggers and actions. Actions range from show a notification, open an app, open an URL, send a text message, or call a Web service, and the user is free to alter rules, activate/deactivate rules, or delete them.
