The Linux Professional Institute (LPI) recently tested its Linux Essentials exam program for the first time on students from Birmingham City University's School of Computing, Telecommunications and Networks.
Linux Essentials is an entry level, international exam that is designed to serve as a stepping stone for gaining advanced computer skills.
The exam should help fill a gap in the information technology (IT) skills market by helping the next generation develop the necessary skills to succeed in IT careers. The exam program is scheduled to be released this summer in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
"Employers I've spoken to whilst trying to find work in the IT industry really value qualifications such as those from LPI as it shows them that you're willing to take it upon yourself to learn new skills outside of your studies," says Birmingham City student Michael Hughes. "It's great to be able to take those qualifications to an employer."
