Dominik Schillinger was honored with the John Argyris Award during the recent World Congress on Computational Mechanics for developing a method for facilitating simulations in mechanical or civil engineering.
His paper, "An Isogeometric Design-through-analysis Methodology based on Adaptive Hierarchical Refinement of NURBS, Immersed Boundary Methods, and T-spline CAD Surfaces," appeared in the Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering journal.
Schillinger's simulation concept enables direct integration of the computer-aided design geometry into the finite element analysis, which completely circumvents time-consuming and often error-prone mesh generation. Using his simulation concept, the overall analysis time with respect to standard finite elements can be reduced by more than 80 percent. The technology could impact the design process in mechanical, automotive, aerospace and civil engineering over the next decade.
A recent scholar at the Munich Center of Advanced Computing, Schillinger worked on the method during his research stay at the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences.
