ICANN Expects gTLD Applications Processing to Start December

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) expects to implement a new batching process for generic top-level domains (gTLDs) by December.
ICANN must evolve the process for handling large numbers of applications for gTLDs, considering it is only possible to add 1,000 new gTLDs to the Root Zone per year and there are close to 2,000 applications for gTLDs.
ICANN proposed a Digital Archery contest to decide which applications for a new gTLD would be evaluated first, but applicants complained the process was unfair, prompting the organization to announce in June the cancellation of the program. The organization then turned to the community for ideas because it had no immediate alternative. The comment period for an alternative process ended Monday, and ICANN now will take some time to evaluate the suggestions.
ICANN plans to spend the next six weeks developing possible solutions, and then hold a series of discussions with the community and its board. Implementation of the new batching process would run from Dec. 19-Jan. 18, and the first delegation request is scheduled for August 2013.
