New Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) CEO Fadi Chehade recently announced his plans to restructure the organization, including the selection of two new senior managers.
The first of these is Sally Costerton, who will serve as head of stakeholder relations and communications. The other is Tarek Kamel, who will work as head of governmental affairs. Both Costerton and Kamel were on the shortlist for the CEO position.
Chehade says his goals will be to better work with stakeholders at a global level and to improve accountability. Chehade already has removed compliance from the purview of the general counsel office and moved registry functions under the chief operating officer. He also has elevated the policy department to a direct report and put senior vice president Kurt Pritz in charge of a new strategy office.
Supporters of the changes say they will enable ICANN's contractual compliance department to work independently in order to avoid past incidents in which the team has been compromised. In addition, ICANN has replaced the head of its generic top-level domain project after the previous manager was forced out.
