Icann Faces Battles Over New Web Domains

Former Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) interim CEO Akram Atallah, who just handed over his duties to new chief Fadi Chehade, says ICANN does not plan to announce the results of any of the 1,930 new generic top-level domain (gTLD) submissions it received until they are all evaluated, "unless the community can agree on a batching method."
Even after the results of the applications are released, the new gTLDs will only be added to the root at about 40 successful applications a week, with a limit of 1,000 applications a year. The digital archery test ICANN devised to determine which applications get added to the root has failed, so ICANN is currently working with the community to devise a new ranking solution, Atallah notes.
The organization also has received more than 6,000 comments on the submitted gTLD applications, and its comment period has been extended until Sept. 26. Atallah says all of the comments will be dealt with by the International Center for Dispute Resolution, the World Intellectual Property Organization, and the International Chamber of Commerce. However, Atallah notes the comment process is not designed to settle any "religious differences" that have "been going on for centuries."
