The New Media Consortium has released a technology outlook to watch for in science, technology, engineering, and math education over the next five years.
The report identifies cloud computing, collaborative environments, mobile apps, and social networking as technologies that could become mainstream in about a year. Augmented reality, learning analytics, massively open online courses, and personal learning environments could be adopted in two to three years, and collective intelligence, the Internet of things, natural user interfaces, and wearable technology could be on the horizon in four to five years. The consortium released short lists for K-12 and higher education earlier this year. Mobile apps and cloud computing are the only technologies that appear on the short lists of all three reports in the one year or less horizon.
Meanwhile, collective intelligence, massively open online courses, social networking, and wearable technology did not make the short lists of the K-12 and higher education reports. The one year or less horizon for K-12 includes cloud computing, collaborative environments, mobile apps, and tablet computing, while the higher education list for this time frame includes cloud computing, mobile apps, social reading, and tablet computing.
