Students Explore Virtual Reality in HIVE

Students at Miami University are using the Huge Immersive Virtual Environment (HIVE) to explore a wide range of topics, from virtual environments to cognitive research.

Users of the virtual environment wear a mounted head display, while cameras lining the gym's walls pick up the infrared signal sent from the helmet, and a backpack sends location signals back to the main computer. "[The HIVE gives] the ability to explore large virtual worlds that are inside a computer, but we make it sound, feel, and look like you are in the place that is in the computer," says Miami professor Eric Bachmann. "It is a wearable rendering unit. You aren’t tied to any equipment and you can walk around."

Psychology students are using HIVE to study topics such as memory, special locations, redirection, and special awareness. Bachmann says the goal is to let the virtual environment exist outside of its current location. "We want a low cost virtual environment that is portable," he says.
