S Gov Galvanises Aust Cyber-Security Experts

The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency recently awarded an $18 million contract to a consortium of research groups, including National ICT Australia (NICTA), to develop software to protect critical systems from cyberattacks.
The researchers will develop software to protect critical systems in unmanned vehicles, such as military aircraft and civilian helicopters. NICTA researchers will collaborate with other consortium partners to develop cybersecurity software over the next four years. "We need to make critical systems more robust, and ensure these are protected in different settings," says NICTA director Jodi Steel. "This project is all about making sure that such systems function as intended, even in the case of cyberattacks."
NICTA researchers will address challenges involved in building high-assurance systems, and complete, formally-proven architectures to protect the control and communication systems of an aerial vehicle. The research also will include studying the security of embedded devices, such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants, set-top boxes, and medical devices.
