The Semantic Web has been slow to catch on with enterprises, but Cambridge Semantics chief technical officer Sean Martin believes big data could give Semantic Web technologies a boost.
Martin says big data efforts such as the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) are still crude and only specialists use the tools. He acknowledges that HDFS offers many benefits, but says trying to understand the oceans of files is a shortcoming.
Martin describes the Semantic Web as simply tagging data and giving a description of what it is. "If you can put more information in — more metadata with the data — then the software can interrogate the data to find out what the data is, and what it's capable of," Martin says. He believes Semantics could bridge the gap. "You can put a layer of semantics on top of any raw, immature system," Martin says. "So now you're using open data standards, which are well written and increasingly world-supported."
