niversities Report Highest-Ever R&d Spending of $65 Billion in Fy 2011

U.S. university spending on research and development (R&D) in all fields rose 6.3 percent in fiscal year 2011, according to the U.S. National Science Foundation's Higher Education Research and Development Survey. Much of the spending increase can be attributed to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which contributed $4.2 billion to university-based R&D in fiscal year 2011.
Total federal funding accounted for 62.6 percent ($40.8 billion) of the $65.1 billion universities spent on R&D in fiscal year 2011. Life sciences received the most funding among the 10 broad fields, growing 6.6 percent to $37.2 billion in fiscal year 2011. Computer sciences funding grew 6 percent to $1.735 billion, while engineering increased 7.7 percent to $10 billion.
The survey population increased from 742 universities in 2010 to 912 universities in 2011.
