Naval Academy to Add Cybersecurity Major

The U.S. Naval Academy plans to offer an accredited cybersecurity major by 2016, and also wants to build a $100 million cybersecurity facility on campus, says Vice Adm. Michael Miller.
The Naval Academy would be one of the first colleges in the U.S. to offer a major in cybersecurity. "We are firmly convinced here that this is the place and now is the time," Miller says.
The academy has been working to boost its cybersecurity training, a growing field of importance for national security. For the first time in about a decade, the academy announced last year that it was changing its core curriculum by adding two cybersecurity courses, which would be required for all midshipmen. Meanwhile, the academy is developing classes for a major in cyberoperations, which could be offered to the class of 2016.
"Though this timeline is not definite yet, if we are successful this would mean that the current plebe class would be able to select cyberoperations as their major later this year and then begin taking classes within that major next fall," says dean Boyd Waite.
